The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments this week on challenges to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, and to Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage in California after 52% of voters approved the measure.

Jonathan Alder is a professor at the Case Western University School of Law.  He outlines what legal issues and precedents may be in play in the court's decision, which will likely come in late June.
