Man killed in Tuesday morning apartment building fire in Waverly

(Waverly, NE) -- A man is killed in an apartment building fire in Waverly.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says just after 11:00 Tuesday morning, deputies and Waverly Fire and Rescue were called to an apartment fire in a unit of the Northland Apartments near 141st and Lancashire St. in Waverly. The sheriff's office says the fire spread to other units in the building eventually causing either fire, smoke or water damage to all eight units in the building.

Investigators say 61 year old Mark Umland, the resident of unit #17, was found dead in his apartment. No other injuries were reported. The fire displaced 20 people in total. LSO says the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced families. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Damage to the building is estimated at $500,000.00.

In addition to Waverly Fire; Southeast Fire, Greenwood Fire, Ashland Fire, Ceresco Fire, Raymond Fire and Eagle Fire all responded to assist with extinguishing the fire.
