Congressman Jeff Fortenberry announces re-election bid

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska U.S. Representative Jeff Fortenberry announces he will be running for re-election.

On Monday, Fortenberry released a video on YouTube making the announcement. Fortenberry, a Republican, represents Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Lincoln, and is Nebraska’s longest-serving congressman. State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks is running for the Democratic nomination for the 1st District.

There was some question over whether Fortenberry would run for re-election after being accused of concealing campaign finance information and making false statements to federal investigators. The Congressman is accused of accepting illegal campaign funds during a California campaign event and lied about the activity to a federal investigator.

Fortenberry is scheduled to go to trial in February. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
