(Council Bluffs, IA) -- A Council Bluffs Police K-9 is injured while on duty.

The Council Bluffs Police Department says just after 10:00 Monday morning, officers and K-9 Rudy were searching an abandoned building at 500 West Broadway for intruders. CBPD says while searching ahead of his handler on an upper floor, K-9 Rudy went through a door leading to a sloped section of roof during the check. The Police Department says Rudy slipped and fell approximately three stories.

CBPD says Rudy suffered a broken femur and tibia during the fall. Due to the severity of his injuries his handler, Officer Colby McCord and Sgt. Ron Albers are transporting Rudy to Iowa State University Veterinary Hospital for surgery at this time.

In a statement, the Council Bluffs Police Department said, "We appreciate the thoughts and will keep the public updated on his condition when more is known."
