So Far, Relatively Calm Severe Weather Season

A forecaster says cooler temperatures play a role in the 2021 Spring severe storm season in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area so far being one of the mildest in 20 years.

Omaha National Weather Service Meteorologist Brett Albright tells KFAB Radio News "we haven't had alot of days of good moisture coming up from the south to give us the other ingredient that we need."

He says compared to the average year, they have issued 53 fewer Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings this year for Eastern Nebraska and some counties in Southwest Iowa.

Albright does expect the cycle will change when it heats up in June and July.

He was commenting on data tracked by the "Iowa State University Environmental Mesonet."
