Amtrak Celebrates Milestone

Amtrak, the quasi-government national rail passenger corporation, celebrates it's 50th Anniversary Saturday.

With American travel habits having firmly shifted to the air and the relatively new Interstate highway system, Amtrak took over most of the fading intercity passenger rail service from private railroad companies during the Nixon Administration, May 1st, 1971.

A Chicago to the Bay Area train, the "California Zephyr," serves Nebraska and southern Iowa on B-N-S-F tracks with stops that include Omaha/Council Bluffs and Lincoln.
