Lincoln Police Department warns residents about copycat police vehicle

(Lincoln, NE) -- The Lincoln Police Department is making residents aware of a vehicle spotted around town that appears to me imitating a police vehicle.

Police say around 6:30 Thursday morning, a police supervisor received a call from a citizen reporting a police cruiser that had been driving erratic around 35th and A Street around midnight on January 8th. Investigators say the citizen described the cruiser as a white and black van with the word ‘Police’ on the vehicle. The caller reported that the vehicle was flashing the high beams, revving the engine, and tailgating.

LPD says investigators were able to determine that it was not a law enforcement vehicle. Investigators have learned that there may people who have had a similar experience with this vehicle in Lincoln and are looking into that possibility.

Police say if you experience something of this nature, please call dispatch to verify that the person is an officer. If you are concerned and cannot call dispatch, you may drive to a lighted, public area to pull over.

Photos of actual Lincoln Police vehicles can be found below.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
