Suicidal man with a gun forces Council Bluffs businesses into lock down

The Council Bluffs Police Department says a suicidal man forced a number of business to go into lock down late Monday morning.

The CBPD says around 10:45, officers were called to the Perfect Stay Motel near 9th and Veterans Memorial Highway for a suicidal man with a gun. When officers arrived, they discovered that the suicidal man had fled from the motel on foot.

Council Bluffs Police Negotiators were able to make contact with the man by cell phone and keep him on the phone while officers searched the area. During the incident, surrounding businesses were contacted about the situation and urged to lock down their facilities for their safety until the suicidal man was located.

Officers located him about a half mile away in the parking lot of Edwards Motorsports and RV’s. Police say the man was not complying with officers’ orders on scene, so a police K-9 was used to get him into custody. No gun was found on the suicidal male’s person at the time of apprehension. The man was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

Council Bluffs police say criminal charges, if any, are pending. Due to the nature of the call, the man's name is not being released at this time.
