Smithfield facility in Crete changes plan; now won't temporarily close

A Crete, Nebraska meat processing plant has changed its plans and will not close now, this after the company made an announcement on Monday saying they would temporarily close their doors amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to an email sent to Smithfield Foods employees, a new plan was announced saying that the plant will not be shutting down but rather reducing hours and production. As of Sunday, nearly 50 employees at the facility had tested positive for the coronavirus as testing was ramped up by the Nebraska National Guard and Bryan Health.

The email states some departments will work different parts of the day, with some leaving at lunch. On Monday, an email sent to employees said all operations at the plant were shut down for at least two weeks.
