"Smash & Grab" Thefts From Cars Up In Lincoln

LINCOLN, Nebraska - The Lincoln Police Department has seen an increase in the number of "smash and grab" thefts from cars.

These thefts typically happen when something of value, like a purse or backpack, is left in plain sight.

Police want to remind everyone to remove valuable from their vehicle, lock it and take the key. When parking in areas such as trail heads, fitness centers or places people commonly hide belongings under the car seats. Keep in mind that a thief could be nearby and watching where you hide your belongings.

Statistics show that thefts from automobiles increased more than 18% compared to a year ago. Open and unlocked car thefts is up more than 19% while broke glass "smash and grabs" are up more than 6%

Reports show that residential burglaries are down about 22% compared to a year ago.
