Fines For Excessive False Alarm Calls In Sarpy County

Sarpy County is getting ready to crack down on the number of false alarms police and fire respond to on a daily basis. Dispatch receives anywhere from two to five on a given day.

Sarpy County Communications Manager Megan Stubenhofer-Barrett tells 6 News, "Anytime we have a false alarm that takes time from dispatchers, it also takes time from the sheriff's officer another jurisdiction, there police department or possible fire."

After the first five false alarm calls, residents will receive a letter and a fine. There will be a $50 fee for false alarm number 6 through 10. After that the fines go up to $100.

Police and Fire will respond to every call, even if a certain place has a history of repeated false alarms. A False Alarm Ordinance went into effect about nine months ago. There have been 1,200 false alarm calls. That averages to about five false alarm calls a day.
