Update: Artillery Shell Explosion Kills Omaha Man

Update:

The investigation revealed that Mr. Knight was mishandling the firework, which was legally purchased here in Omaha. We suggest that individuals follow the manufacturer's instructions when using fireworks.

6 News reports that those close to Knight say he suffered from PTSD and Conduct Disorder. The incident happened at the home of a sister of a caregiver and he was among friends and family members.

Knight was under the care of Omni Behavioral Health.

Omaha Police say a 28-year-old man has died after suffering critical injuries Sunday night in a fireworks accident.

Officer Michael Pecha says Johnny Ray Knight was injured when an artillery shell exploded around 5:45 p.m. Knight was taken to Nebraska Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Pecha says the tragedy is a reminder of how powerful fireworks can be. "People need to be aware of the damage these fireworks can do if they're not safe. You have to take it seriously and stay a safe distance from these after they have been lit."
