Chemical Leak At Nathan Hale Middle School

A hazardous materials team was called to Nathan Hale Middle School near 61st and Sorenson Parkway Wednesday afternoon after a chemical leak was reported.

The call came in around 2:20. In an e-mail to parents, Principal Darin Williams said it appeared one of the construction crews hit a chemical tank underneath the school's swimming pool causing a strong odor in the building.

He says the appropriate authorities were contacted and students in the impacted classrooms were evacuated to other parts of the school. The did not have to go outside.

Williams said while crews work to clean up the situation no one was being allowed into that part of the building. Some students did not have a chance to grab their backpacks or coats. Parents were encouraged to pick their kids up.

There were no reports of anyone being affected by the leak.
