Lincoln Mother Killed, Daughter Injured In Crash

Lincoln Police say a woman was killed and her daughter critically injured in a one vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

An off-duty Lancaster County sheriff's deputy discovered the wreckage near North First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 1 a.m. and summoned emergency responders.

The investigation revealed a 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander was Southbound on North 1st when it left the roadway to the right. The vehicle struck a utility box and a tree off the roadway.

Police say the driver, 38 year old Julie Schmieding, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her passenger, 15 year old Tylea Schmieding, was taken to a Lincoln hospital with critical injuries that are described as life-threatening.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash and it is unknown if seatbelts were in use.  The accident remains under investigation.
