Elkhorn River Recreation Area Closed Due To Flood Damage

The flood waters this summer have taken a toll on a popular Elkhorn River recreation area.  John Winkler with Papio-Missouri NRD says damage from the high water has forced them to close the Elkhorn Crossing access site and campground fro the rest of the year.

"I know it's frustrating to the public because they are very popular sites, especially for tubers and tankers and fishermen," Winkler says.  "But we thought it best to close it in the fall so we didn't have to delay getting it open in the spring."

Winkler says the water damage is extensive.  "It basically killed all of the grass and some of the trees."  Winkler says the fall is the best time to get the grass re-established.  They will also redo the damaged road and repair come of the camping pads.

The West Maple Road and Graske Crossing access sites remain open.
