Extra Security For Santa Lucia Festival

In the wake of Saturday night's gun violence that killed a 20 year old woman and injured six others near 11th and Farnam,  Santa Lucia Festival officials are working with the City to make sure all visitors are safe this weekend along the riverfront and downtown areas.

Santa Lucia Festival Committee President Danielle Swerczek says on-site security will be provided by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.  Omaha Police will also be increasing their presence around Lewis and Clark Landing and in downtown.

For the first time, Swerczek says they are adding overnight security on the landing, where the event has been held since 2005.  She says during that time they have not had one single report of violence or any other criminal activity during their celebration.

This is the 94th year overall for the Italian festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday.  It features plenty of food and entertainment, eating contests and a bocce ball tournament.
