Bike Sharing Program To Expand This Year

Don't be surprised when you see more bike sharing racks popping up across the metro.

Heartland B-cycle Executive Director Ben Turner tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB that Omaha's popular bike sharing program, will be adding a number of new stations around town. "We'll be able to more than double the number of stations in our system. Right now, I think we're looking at adding 39 stations this year."

Turner says since the program's inception, they've had a large presence downtown and in Aksarben Village, but want to bridge the gap between the two areas. "We're looking to really connect those two by hitting neighborhoods like Midtown Crossing, the Blackstone District, along the Farnam corridor and just west of downtown." Some stations are already located in those areas, but Turner says more will be added.

The other part of the expansion, Turner says, is on college campuses. "We're planning on venturing out into both north and south Omaha as well as hitting some campuses like UNO, MCC and UNMC."

Turner says they hope to get many of the new bike stations installed before the College World Series, and says that the program is also expanding into Lincoln as well. You can see more about Heartland B-cycle on their website
