Controversy In Bellevue Over Cemetery Ordinance

Controversy is brewing in Bellevue over a place that is meant to provide peace for the dead.

Three members of the Bellevue Cemetery Committee resigned Monday night as the Bellevue City Council took public comments on new proposed cemetery rules.  The ordinance proposes a number of changes to the rules of decorations on grave sites, but the biggest change would be about national flags.

Committee member Allen Holley was one of the members that turned in his resignation and he says they've been frustrated with the city. "The issue here is flags, period." Holley says the committee wants flags in the cemetery be limited to the American flag, but other city leaders don't agree. They believe flags from other countries should be allowed to be placed on graves as long as they are in a designated flag holder.

One man addressed the council saying families should be able to fly whatever country's flag they feel is appropriate. Nick Jones placed a British flag on his mother's grave to honor her service to the Royal Navy, and he doesn't think he should have to take it down.

The Bellevue City Council will vote on the ordinance December 11th.
