The Omaha Fire Department said Friday the blaze that heavily damaged a home near 42nd Street and Redick Avenue Thursday afternoon was started by a child playing with matches.

The fire broke out around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.  Battalion Chief Mike Pritchard tells Newsradio 1110 KFAB there was heavy smoke coming out the front door when they arrived.  Pritchard says it appears the fire started in the rear of the house and caused extensive damage.

It was the home of Crystal Brown, a single mother of four.  Crystal’s three other children were at day care at the time of the blaze.

The Red Cross is helping Brown and her children.
