Stothert: Omaha May End Up With Surplus

(AP) _

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says the city could end the year with a $5.6 million surplus.

The mayor credits higher revenue from building permits and motor vehicle taxes for the anticipated surplus.

Stothert also says a hiring free on city employees and cost-cutting has improved the city's budget situation.

The expected surplus is a turnaround from the $13 million shortfall officials had forecast earlier in the year.

The police department should be $4.9 million below its budget because of vacant positions left unfilled and other reductions.

The fire department will likely be $6.2 million over budget. Most of that budget gap will be covered by a contingent liability fund.
