Omaha mayor Jean Stothert is floating a proposal that would strip future fire chiefs of civil service protection.
The mayor said on Friday's Newsradio 1110 KFAB's Good Morning Show, "I don't see any reason for the fire chief (to have civil service protection) whatsover... I think he should be evaluated on his performance, just like any other department director."
The move would give the mayor the ability to fire the fire chief with no questions asked. She said she does support civil service protection for Omaha's police chief.
