The calendar says early October, but a major snow storm is packing a punch in western Nebraska. A blizzard warning covers five of the northernmost counties in the Nebraska Panhandle.

Classes and school events were canceled in several districts on Friday and the Chadron State College homecoming parade and other homecoming events have been called off.

North of Chadron, a foot of snow has already fallen in South Dakota's Black Hills.  This picture from a Nebraska Department of Roads camera shows some of the snowy conditions near Chadron.

On the east side of the state, severe weather is forecast for a second straight night.  A tornado watch is in effect for eastern Nebraska and western Iowa until 10:00 Friday evening.

The watch includes Omaha, Council Bluffs and Lincoln.
