More Omaha Apartments Going Smoke-Free

The number of apartment complexes going smoke-free in Omaha is growing.

"Since 2012, we've idenified close to forty properties who have some kind of smoke-free policy in place," says Aja Anderson of the Douglas County Health Department.

The latest to go smoke-free is the Hillsborough Point Apartments near 144th and West Maple. Fire destroyed two buildings in separate incidents. Both, however, were caused by careless smokers. Shawn Knudsen manages the apartments, and says a few changes have been made.

"We've actually added a fire sprinkler system on every apartment patio and deck on the entire property,". Knudsen says.
