Nebraska Appleseed and the NationalCenter for Law and Economic Justice filed a class-action lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of a single mother in Lincoln and others who say they have been unlawfully delayed from receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
The lawsuit accuses the Department of Health and Human Services of not processing requests for food assistance within a certain time frame as required by federal law.
DHHS uses the ACCESS Nebraska system to process SNAP benefits. Nebraska Appleseed reports that problems with that system caused delays and errors resulting in many households unable to access food programs.
The lawsuit alleges that hundreds of Nebraska households have waited longer than the federal required time frames for receiving benefits.
