A ground breaking ceremony for Omaha's new Stephen Center is planned for Friday morning.

The new $9.6 million facility includes an emergency shelter and permanent housing units.

Mayor Jean Stothert, Archbishop George Lucas and other dignitaries plan to attending the 10 a.m. celebration.

The Stephen Center was established in 1984 to provide food and shelter to the homeless and needy in south Omaha.

It has since added a substance abuse treatment center providing drug, alcohol and mental health services.
