Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine confirms to NewsRadio 1110 KFAB that at least two people were killed on Monday when a portion of the International Nutrition plant near 77th and I Street collapsed.
Omaha Interim Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said this afternoon there
were fatalities inside the building, but declined to provide a number. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine confirms at least two people were killed.
Kanger says 38 people were reportedly working at the time of the incident around 10:00 Monday morning. He says 10 workers were injured, two critically. 7 workers were treated at the scene or declined medical assistance. One Omaha firefighter suffered a hand laceration.
About two dozen members of the the Nebraska Urban Search and Rescue team arrived on the scene Monday afternoon. The team will assess the structural integrity of the building and determine what they must do to make the facility safe for recovery efforts.
Kanger says the effort is expected to take hours and perhaps even days. He said recovery workers would not enter the facility until it was determined that shoring operations had made it safe for the workers.
