Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert made a new offer Friday morning to the Omaha Fire Union regarding the plan to trim expenses which would prevent the layoff of 19 firefighters in January.

Stothert says the city will accept a one part of a counter offer from the Union to cut the paramedic class in 2014 from 48 to 9.  In exhcange the City would not layoff firefighters in 2014 and 2015.

Stothert says the City will agree to treat all current firefighters in the same and equal manner regarding layoff protection.  The agreement would also give the City "unrestricted discretion" to determine the overall staffing, including the right to layoff starting in 2016.

Stothert is hoping the Union will agree to the offer in the next few days.
