The annual Avenue of Flags has been missing so far this year from Bellevue, which sits next to Offutt Air Force Base.

The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce had to cancel the event because no one had donated the $3,800 needed. One hundred U.S. flags usually fly along an east-west thoroughfare from early May through Veterans Day in November.

But people began to respond and donate after reading an article in the local newspaper, the Bellevue Leader. The chamber has more than $600 in pledges and has ordered 50 flags. Organizers hope more patriotic donors will step forward.

Plans are to have the flags up and flying before Independence Day next week.
